Submissions Guidelines
Submissions Overview | Manuscript Format Guidelines

* At this time we are not seeking: children's/young adult,
inspirational, biographies, historical (unless it fits into one of our
other lines). * Make sure your submission does not include auto-reject elements. (See Submissions Overview.) * At this time, we are accepting unsolicited general submissions for the following genres, in addition to the open lines listed below:
*erotica (regardless of sub-genre; we expect it to be hot however)
*romance (regardless of sub-genre or heat level)
*horror, mystery/thriller
*steampunk/cyberpunk/clockwork
*New Age/esoteric non-fiction works (think Tarot, herbs, crystals, etc.)
General submissions can be mainstream, menage/multiple partners, or GLBT. For general submissions that do NOT fit in our stated lines (see guidelines below), QUERY
FIRST. Send a query letter AND synopsis (including story resolution) in
the BODY of an email. Email: query AT captivapress.com * Do not query on
incomplete manuscripts. If you are invited to submit a full manuscript, send the full manuscript, not a partial. (Authors already
signed with us may query their editor on works in progress.) Please
follow our file naming conventions or you risk your file being eaten by our spam filter.
* Make sure to change the email address you use to remove the spaces and add an @ to it. (It's to minimize spam bot harvesting.)
* Captiva Clockwork and More:
Length: 10k - 150k+
Subject: Steampunk, clockpunk, cyberpunk, or any variation of the genres you'd like to explore. In this line, sex and romance isn't a requirement, but we'd surely love to see it. Give us your mad scientists, your corseted heroines, goggled guys, monstrous machines, and anything else you'd like to toss into the crazy blender that makes up this loosely-bound (or tightly-wound!) genre.

* Captiva Mini Collection:
Length: 10k - 25k
Subject: There are as many ways to practice BDSM as there are people who practice it. Whether it's a light-hearted D/s sissy-boy maid story, or a dark and tantalizing full-on M/s heavy impact play session, some aspect of BDSM must be a central theme in the story and not just a vanilla story with a woman getting swatted on the ass. (Trust us, our editors are fully versed in many flavors of "the lifestyle," so you'd better know what you're writing about when you submit it.) Sensual to scorching heat level. HEA/HFN not required if the story is strong, but we prefer it. Sub-genres (paranormal, contemporary, sci-fi, menages, etc.) allowed. Do not send us your wank fodder--we want a story.

Subject: Our requirements are the same as for the Captiva Mini line, but longer. Send only completed manuscripts, do not send partials or query on incomplete manuscripts. (Authors already signed may query their editor directly on partials/wips.)

* Captiva After Dark:
Length: 10k - 150k+
Subject: Hot, erotic, spicy -- make us break out the cold drinks, turn down the A/C, and fan ourselves. Unusual plot lines that don't fall within the other stated lines. Don't bother sending us the usual boy meets girl, boy does girl stories, or anything sweet. Sultry to slutty is the name of the game here. We don't just want hot -- we want plot! HEA or HFN resolution preferred, but if it's a strong storyline, we will consider other endings. Genres in addition to contemporary (paranormal, sci-fi, western, historical, etc.) welcomed.

* Captiva Cowboys:

Saddle up! We aren't interested in your version of "Brokeback Mountain." We want cowboys and cowgirls, (or cowboys with cowboys!), westerns modern or historical, but regardless of where it's set, we want it hot enough to require a horse trough full of water to cool us down after reading it. M/F, menage, or M/M/+ accepted. HEA or HFN resolution preferred, but if it's a strong storyline, we will consider other endings.

* Pirate Pleasure:
Length: 10k - 25k
Subject: Whether it's a royal rogue on the high seas, a royal pain in the ass in the High Sierras, or a futuristic gaming geek in the University Center, pirates are pirates. Whether master of his (or her) plane, train, automobile, sea-faring vessel, space ship, or high-powered server, pirates have long held an attraction. Try to hold ours! They can be set in the past, present or future, on Earth or elsewhere. "Piracy" is the key, so is romance. Never sacrifice plot for passion! We don't want sex scenes tied together with a skim-milk plot. We want the creme de la creme! Try your hand on the piracy theme, however you interpret it. For this line, we prefer scorching hot love scenes. Warning: Do NOT send us yet another *yawn!* how-I-would-have-written-it "Pirates of the Caribbean" or "Battlestar Gallactica" knock-off. Must have a HEA or HFN resolution.

Subject: Just what the title says, the more, the merrier. Regardless of the alphabet soup combination of hook-ups, we're looking for menage, not just multiple partners. Note: don't bother submitting "twincest" stories. If you have sibling relatives in the menage, they cannot "do" each other, although brothers (or sisters) can share the same partner at the same time. Menage a trois/quatre/???, het or GLBT, anything goes. Sensual to scorching heat level. HEA or HFN resolution strongly preferred. Sub-genres (paranormal, historical, cowboys, etc.) welcomed.

Subject: Life's a beach...and we like it that way. Where's your beach? Is it a Caribbean paradise resort? Rocky California coastline? Futuristic far away planet getaway? Wherever it is, that's where we want you to take us. Scorching hot love scenes, but there better be a plot that leads to them. Genre doesn't matter, as long as "the beach" is not just a passing mention, but perhaps even a central character in your tale. Must have a HEA or HFN resolution.

Make us pant, make us drool, make us sit up and beg for your story. Sensual to scorching, no closed-door sex scenes. Must have a HEA or HFN resolution.
